The connection between the metal tab and the pouch seal is a small but critical area of a pouch cell. The shape and finish of the cell tab edge can influence sealing quality, manufacturing consistency and ultimately the reliability of the finished cell.
At Avocet Battery Materials, edge preparation is an important consideration in the development of tabs for our customers, particularly for thicker metals and demanding cell designs.
Why the Cell Tab Edge Matters
The polymer must seal effectively around the edges of the metal tab, where differences in material thickness can make achieving a consistent seal more challenging. An unsuitable edge profile may create voids or cause areas of the polymer to become excessively thin.
Creating an appropriate tapered edge provides a smoother transition between the tab and surrounding polymer, helping to achieve a more consistent seal. The correct profile isn’t necessarily the same for every tab. Factors including tab thickness, polymer thickness, polymer flexibility and metal properties all need to be considered when determining the most suitable edge geometry.
Reducing the Risk of Pouch Damage
Sharp metal edges can present a risk to the pouch itself. During sealing, handling or flexing of the finished cell, an unsuitable edge could place additional stress on the surrounding material and increase the possibility of damage. Preparing the edge reduces the severity of these sharp transitions and helps protect the pouch film around one of the cell’s most critical sealing areas. There is also a practical manufacturing benefit. Cell tabs may be handled by operators during assembly, so reducing unnecessarily sharp edges can help make them safer to work with.
Different Materials Require Different Approaches
Edge preparation isn’t simply a matter of applying the same process to every cell tab. Different tab metals have different mechanical properties. Metal hardness, for example, affects how material is removed during edge preparation and can influence factors such as processing speed and tool selection. Understanding both the tab material and the customer’s cell design allows the edge profile and manufacturing process to be selected accordingly.
Getting the Details Right
A battery tab has a relatively simple appearance, but producing one that integrates effectively into a pouch cell requires careful consideration of the details.
At Avocet Battery Materials, we invest in research and development around edge preparation to help achieve high-quality profiles that support sealing performance, manufacturing consistency and safety.
If you’re developing a pouch cell and need a cell tab manufactured to your specific dimensions, materials and edge requirements, our team can work with you to develop a solution suited to your application.
